Moment of inertia

Moment of inertia: a cross-sectional parameter describing the distribution of the cross-sectional area relative to a given axis of analysis.

The farther the area is located from the axis (e.g. in an I-beam), the greater the moment of inertia.

The moment of inertia is used in the calculation of normal stresses due to bending, shear stresses due to shear (Żurawski formula), and displacements.
